Kraków, also known as Cracow, is a city and the capital of Małopolskie województwo (province) in southern Poland. It lies on both sides of the upper Vistula River. As one of the largest cities in Poland, Kraków is renowned for its grand historic architecture and cultural leadership. In fact, UNESCO designated its old town area as a World Heritage site in 1978. The city’s Main Square, known as Rynek Główny, has existed since the 13th century, and a modern landscaped area now occupies the site of past fortifications.

Historically, Kraków was home to the Wiślanie tribe (Vistulans), who occupied Małopolska (Little Poland) until the 10th century. In 988, Mieszko I, the prince of Poland, united the southern and northern territories to form a powerful kingdom. His son, Bolesław I (the Brave), later established Kraków as the seat of a Polish bishopric. The city rapidly expanded as a trade center and became the capital of one of Poland’s major principalities in 1138. Despite being devastated by Tatar invasions during the 13th century, Kraków was quickly rebuilt and received “Magdeburg rights” (a municipal constitution) in 1257.

In 1320, King Władysław I (the Short) reunited Poland and made Kraków the official capital. From then on, the kings of Poland were traditionally crowned in Wawel Castle and entombed in Wawel Cathedral. Throughout the 14th century, Kraków served as Poland’s economic and political center and played a crucial role in trade between England and Hungary. Simultaneously, it blossomed into an intellectual and cultural hub, exemplified by the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364 by Casimir III (the Great). This prestigious university drew scientists, artists, and scholars from across Europe and remains the second oldest university in central Europe.

However, by 1600, Kraków began to decline. The Jagiellon dynasty came to an end, and in 1611, King Sigismund III Vasa moved the capital from Kraków to Warsaw, diminishing Kraków’s significance.
