Kraków, also known as Cracow, is a city and the capital of Małopolskie województwo (province) in southern Poland. It lies on both sides of the upper Vistula River. Historically, Kraków was home to the Wiślanie tribe (Vistulans), who occupied Małopolska (Little Poland) until the 10th century. His son, Bolesław I (the Brave), later established Kraków as the seat of a Polish bishopric. The city rapidly expanded as a trade center and became the capital of one of Poland’s major principalities in 1138. Despite being devastated by Tatar invasions during the 13th century, Kraków was quickly rebuilt and received “Magdeburg rights” (a municipal constitution) in 1257.

In 1320, King Władysław I (the Short) reunited Poland and made Kraków the official capital. From then on, the kings of Poland were traditionally crowned in Wawel Castle and entombed in Wawel Cathedral. Throughout the 14th century, Kraków served as Poland’s economic and political center and played a crucial role in trade between England and Hungary. Simultaneously, it blossomed into an intellectual and cultural hub, exemplified by the Jagiellonian University, founded in 1364 by Casimir III (the Great).
