Ancient Athens developed the first known democracy around 508 BCE. Citizens (free adult males) could vote directly on laws and public decisions. Although limited in participation, it laid the foundation for modern democratic systems.

The word philosophy comes from the Greek "philo" (love) and "sophia" (wisdom), meaning “love of wisdom.” It reflects the Greek tradition of questioning, reasoning, and seeking truth about life, morality, and the universe.

Greece is situated in Southern Europe, at the southeastern end of the Balkan Peninsula. While it is geographically close to Asia and Africa, it is politically and culturally European. Greece is a founding member of the EU and has strong historical ties to European civilization through Ancient Greece and the Byzantine Empire.

In ancient Greek mythology, Zeus was the ruler of Mount Olympus and the king of all gods. He was the god of the sky, thunder, and lightning, and played a dominant role in many myths and legends. His symbols include the lightning bolt, eagle, and oak tree.

Homer is credited with composing The Iliad and The Odyssey, epic poems central to ancient Greek culture. The Iliad recounts the events of the Trojan War, while The Odyssey follows the hero Odysseus’ journey home. These works influenced literature for centuries.

Moussaka is a traditional Greek dish that features layers of sliced eggplant, minced meat (usually lamb or beef), tomato sauce, and béchamel sauce. It is baked until golden and is often served as a main course, especially during holidays and family gatherings.

Greece adopted the euro (€) as its official currency in 2001, replacing the Greek drachma. As part of the Eurozone, Greece shares its currency with 19 other EU countries, allowing for easier trade and travel. However, the switch also tied Greece to EU fiscal policies, which played a role during its financial crisis.

Baklava is a rich dessert made from layers of phyllo pastry filled with chopped nuts (often walnuts or pistachios) and sweetened with honey or syrup. Though popular across the Middle East, baklava is a staple in Greek cuisine, especially during festive seasons.

Aristotle was a student of Plato and teacher to Alexander the Great. He contributed significantly to nearly every field of knowledge, including logic, metaphysics, ethics, politics, biology, and literary criticism. Unlike Plato, he emphasized empirical observation and the scientific method.

The Greek alphabet has been in use since around the 9th century BCE and was the first to include vowels. It forms the basis for many modern alphabets, including Latin and Cyrillic. Letters like alpha, beta, and omega are widely used in science and mathematics today.

The Greek War of Independence (1821–1830) was fought against the Ottoman Empire. Inspired by nationalism and aided by foreign powers (Britain, France, Russia), Greece won its sovereignty and was recognized as an independent nation in 1830.

Sparta, located in the Peloponnese, was a militaristic society known for its disciplined army, rigorous training, and elite warriors. Unlike democratic Athens, Sparta was ruled by a dual monarchy and an oligarchic council. Boys began military training at age 7.

The Greek flag consists of nine horizontal blue and white stripes with a white cross on a blue square in the top-left corner. The cross symbolizes Greek Orthodoxy, while the stripes are said to represent the nine syllables of the Greek phrase: "Elefthería í Thánatos" ("Freedom or Death").

Crete is the largest Greek island, located in the southern Aegean Sea. It was the center of the Minoan civilization, one of the earliest advanced societies in Europe (c. 3000–1450 BCE), known for the palace of Knossos and myth of the Minotaur.

Socrates (469–399 BCE) is widely regarded as the founder of Western philosophy. He is best known for the Socratic Method—asking probing questions to stimulate critical thinking. Socrates wrote nothing himself, but his student Plato recorded many of his dialogues, preserving his ideas. He laid the foundation for ethics, epistemology, and political philosophy.

Modern Greek is the official language of Greece and has evolved from Ancient Greek, a language that shaped much of Western literature, science, and philosophy. Greek has its own alphabet and is one of the oldest recorded living languages in the world.

Philip II of Macedon appointed Aristotle to tutor his son, Alexander the Great. Under Aristotle’s guidance, Alexander was exposed to philosophy, science, politics, and ethics, shaping his later achievements as a conqueror and ruler.

Greece became the tenth member of the European Economic Community (now the EU) in 1981. Membership boosted economic development, trade, and infrastructure. It adopted the euro in 2001 as part of deeper integration with the Eurozone.
